Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
