A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
